President Trump tweeted in defense of his comment that he is ‘the chosen one’ during a Wednesday press conference while discussing the trade arrangements with China.

He claimed that the comment was only in jest and that media outlets critical of the remark did not accurately reflect that he was joking.

“When I looked up to the sky and jokingly said ‘I am the chosen one,’ at a press conference two days ago, referring to taking on Trade with China, little did I realize that the media would claim that I had a ‘Messiah complex,'” Trump tweeted on Saturday.

He continued, “They knew I was kidding, being sarcastic, and just … having fun. I was smiling as I looked up and around. The MANY reporters with me were smiling also. They knew the TRUTH…And yet when I saw the reporting, CNN, MSNBC and other Fake News outlets covered it as serious news & me thinking of myself as the Messiah. No more trust!”

The president’s tweets served to double down on a point he made to reporters as he departed the White House Friday night for the G-7 summit in France.

“You know exactly what I meant,” he said when asked about the comment. “It was sarcasm. It was joking. We were all smiling.”

On Friday, Trump also announced an additional increase in tariffs on Chinese goods after China slapped American products with tariffs.
